When applying for the internship at Gisou, I never thought that I would actually get it. After writing a very passionate motivational letter, here I was attending two interviews, and finally I got my dream offer. I did not know much about the company except for their truly inspiring social media marketing and creative campaigns.
My internship was in the communications department, with a focus on social media and influencer marketing. Very quickly, after the first days, I became very close with the other interns. Gisou welcomes around 10 interns every semester, all for different departments. We were all in the same situation, entering the unknown and starting completely new, full time jobs for the next six months.
I was lucky to have a great, communicative supervisor, and since the beginning, we have been working closely on various projects. What I truly enjoyed about the internship was the beautiful environment, the Gisou office in the centre of Amsterdam is truly stunning. I also learned a lot about the beauty industry and beauty products themselves. I had to do a number of analyses for marketing purposes, where I would analyse social media content, our competitor’s and our own marketing performance. I never knew as much about cosmetics, and I definitely leave the company with so much new knowledge about this particular industry. Gisou is not as big of a company (yet), it is a very fast growing scale-up, with around 100 employees. Therefore, as an intern, you have the opportunity to collaborate a lot with other departments during your internship. For me specifically it was a lot of fun to work with different people from the communications, creative and marketing departments! I found out that my ideal future job would definitely include elements of creative input.
However, what became a challenge was my full schedule everyday. I did not really have time to work on my school tasks during my work hours, and therefore and I found it very difficult for me to balance healthy lifestyle, my new 9-5 job and school work. At the end I managed, and I finish this experience with self-satisfaction, new friends and with a new skill set, including the ability to set boundaries about the workload.
