Starting a first real corporate job in the middle of pandemic is something no one expected, and even more so, no one was prepared for. Or at least, I clearly wasn’t. But here I am, six months later, looking back at all I’ve learned while working in the Strategy & Programs team of the Customer Experience department at FedEx during such challenging times.
This position not only it solidified what I have learned in the past three years of my studies, but it also helped me gain new practical skills. I had countless opportunities to put in practice core elements of my theoretical background as well as other capabilities.
However, these are not the main topics that come to mind when I think about my experience at FedEx. The tough period humanity is going through was not easy on my general well-being. This internship gave me the opportunity to acquire something that for me, especially during this period, is far more valuable than any theory or practical skill: self-awareness.
Working in a corporate environment always seemed to me like the epitome of success, but I was scared of the possibility I might never fit in. The hierarchy, the meetings, the big scale projects, they all sounded a little intimidating to me. But, when I chose to apply to this position, I thought it would be interesting to try. And this experience really changed my view on what working in a big corporation should feel like.
I was lucky enough to be welcomed into a team that values everyone’s opinion equally, that treated everyone with respect and that relied a lot on feedback. I came to find out that anyone in this company, no matter their position was so easy to reach and so easy to talk to. This openness helped me see how I work best with other people, what my weaknesses are when it comes to team work, especially when interacting with others while just being an image on a screen. I was encouraged to reflect upon my own actions, to express my ideas, and to ask for help, which increased my self-awareness and self-efficacy.
FedEx is a place that fosters growth, especially for a new-comer. All failures are treated as learning opportunities, and you are always encouraged to think outside the box. I strongly believe this position can be beneficial for all those who want to become the best version of themselves, professionally speaking. The pleasant and enriching experience I had can only serve as a recommendation to start an internship at FedEx. The good news is the Communication Intern position will be soon available!
