Starting an Internship

Opening up my laptop to book a flight to Korea, I find an announcement looking for an internship at Coway, one of the major companies in Korea. I can prove it by telling you this: BTS is their spokesperson. For me, who had been looking for an internship for over two months, it was the last chance. Otherwise, the only way was to fly to my own home country, Korea, and find a job there. When I was sending them an email, I spend about two hours deeply considering if I should say “I have to let my landlord know if I am going to leave or not, so would you please give me a reply ASAP?” (of course in a more polite way of wording). Thank God I did not, because my older brother, who has a time difference of 8 hours, urgently responded way after I sent the email with a lot of “no”s in his reply to my question regarding this issue.

Thankfully, the company replied to me back on Monday offering a chance to have an interview. They wanted me to come on Wednesday. I borrowed some neat clothes such as a blazer and trousers from a good friend of mine. Also, I did some research on the history of the company, what their best selling products are, what they value, and etc. I especially thought about their marketing strategy that can work well in Europe by myself to show them my interest in their company. Since I was prepared, I did not feel very anxious. I think it is very important that you admit that you are inexperienced. However, that is what an internship is for. Otherwise, you would just get hired as an official employee, right? So my advice is do not be scared, interns are not perfect, but be sure you are confident, willing to learn, and interested in the company you are applying to.

In the evening, I got the offer. Even though I was planning to travel to Ireland and come back on coming Monday, I booked one more flight on Sunday so that I could be working from Monday. I told my aunt that I got the job and she told me to greet people, say hi, smile, and that’s the most important thing. I mean, it makes sense, right? You cannot show your competence or skills from the first day because there are so many things you do not know, but you can show your attitude. You can smile and try to learn. At the moment I am writing this blog, it has been three weeks since I started working here as a performance marketing team. With my proactive attitude, I have learned a lot within a short period and therefore, I am taking more part in major projects or tasks than what a typical intern would do. My ultimate goal until the end of this internship is to maintain this attitude! Cheers!
