My Internship at Avery Dennison

Hello, everyone! My name is Patricia Beschea, I am a fourth year Communication Science student and I’m excited to share a glimpse into my experience as a Marketing Excellence Intern at Avery Dennison. For those who might not know, Avery Dennison is a global manufacturer specializing in adhesive labels and packaging. Our European HQ is in Oegstgeest, a small city next to Leiden, where I had the fantastic opportunity to work.

My day usually kicked off with a cup of coffee and a quick check of my emails. Once settled, I dove into my main task for the day: filling in marketing attributes for the products in our portfolio database. This might sound tedious to some, but I found it quite engaging. Using the company’s software, I ensured all product details were up-to-date and accurately reflected the latest changes and additions.

One of my key responsibilities was supporting our product managers. This involved creating and sending out various marketing communications, such as product change notifications, regulatory datasheets, and technical datasheets. These documents were crucial for keeping our customers informed about product updates and ensuring they had all the necessary technical information. Most times I also had to request translations, as AVery Dennison is a largely global company, thus I was in constant contact with the customer service department as well.

A unique aspect of my role was collaborating with the sustainability team. Customers often had questions about the sustainability of our products, and it was my job to investigate and communicate the answers. Using Salesforce.com, I managed these “sustainability cases,” ensuring that our responses aligned with our marketing guidelines and provided accurate information.

My team was quite small, consisting of 4 people inclusing myself and my manager, so it felt like a close-knit community. We often shared insights, discussed ongoing projects, and sometimes, just chatted about our day-to-day lives.

One of the highlights of my internship was the opportunity to take on extra projects. For instance, I collaborated with the Market Research Analysis team on a project comparing value growth within our largest customers to predict the demand for AD products. This experience broadened my understanding of market research and statistical analysis, adding valuable skills to my toolkit. It felt rather exciting having the support of my team as well to embark on more projects putside of my routine responsabiltities.

The intern community at the company is also rather strong, as there were so many of us and helped eachother whenever we had troubles adapting in the organisation.

I would strongly recommend Avery Dennison as a first internship experience as I fell like I learned a lot and felt like I was part of something influential.
