Ever heard of Mysteryland, Sensation, Amsterdam Open Air, Defqon.1, Vunzige Deuntjes Festival? Well, the company I did my internship at organises all these festivals!
Back in February the semester had already started, and I had not yet found an internship. I am not going to lie, finding an internship during the pandemic was very hard. Luckily, a friend of mine sent me an Instagram story of a marketing vacancy at VD Events, which is the company that organizes Vunzige Deuntjes Festival, and which falls under ID&T. I took my shot and finally, one week after the semester had started, I started my internship.
Looking back, I had a really great time. Starting off, I was nervous to meet everyone via Teams, not knowing in what ways colleagues would communicate with each other (formal or informal). Luckily, the team turned out to be very chill and not too formal, which made me feel comfortable very fast.
I started off with an assignment to create a fictional content planning for the Instagram. After this, I got more and more tasks, such as creating a statistics sheet and presenting the statistics on the Monday morning. But it still it really felt like I was waiting to be told what to do by my supervisor. Sometimes, the supervisor was busy too, so I decided to ask for some responsibilities. Luckily, I got to do the customer service, not only for Vunzige Deuntjes Festival, but also for Mysteryland, Sensation and Amsterdam Open Air. It was great getting to work for these large brands, and it taught me a lot about communication between festival visitors and companies, although it sometimes felt a bit like a typical intern task.
I also learned about content planning. Me and three other interns started to fill in the content planning with exciting ideas to keep our engagement rate high, such as quizzes for the Instagram story. This was a fun and valuable learning experience. It taught me a lot about how Instagram works and how to communicate with your audience.
Luckily, we had the chance to go to the office one day of the week. It really made me feel ‘normal’ again, which was great. The office is big and modern, but also a bit informal, which made it a really great place. There were loads of artworks on the walls and decorations everywhere. The best thing was that you could get free drinks all day and order lunch online which you could pick up at the reception around lunchtime.
A great memory was the day me and the three other interns got to help at the Defqon at home livestream. We had to help with the construction and dismantling of the sets. Although this was not related to the internship at all, it was nice to work in such a big team and to contribute to such a big project.
All in all, I would recommend this internship to anyone who has an interest in working in the event organizing industry or the music industry. It taught me very valuable lessons about corporate life in general, about engaging an audience on social media and being creative.
