Life is Better When You Laugh!
Young? Confused? Broke? Ha! Sometimes, all you can do is laugh.
2020 has thrown us more than enough curveballs- and it’s only July. The news is nothing but solemn, the social scene is nothing but dead and hope for group gatherings in public spaces is out of sight. If you’re lucky enough, you too could be searching for experience as an intern during this tumultuous time! What a great time to be in desperate need of income, but in an even more desperate need for internship credits. I can relate. There I was leisurely living my pre-Covid life, when the time to find an internship swept me right off of my lawn chair.
I embarked on a journey to find an internship which would allow me to connect my creative interests, namely comedy, with skills I’ve picked up during my studies as a Communication Science bachelor’s student. I applied to a handful of comedy clubs around Amsterdam, hoping that one would be able to accommodate a communication science intern. Luckily enough, I met my matchmake in heaven! Boom Chicago offered me a position as a marketing intern, working closely alongside the head of marketing as well as the founders of the company. The company itself is rather small, so our meetings are personal and there tends to be a more flat corporate dynamic. As a first-time professional in an office setting, I was extremely nervous that I would make a mistake. The head of marketing was able to walk me through several tasks as part of a transitional training period, until I was comfortable enough to complete most tasks on my own. As marketing has recently become more focused on online content, it was extremely interesting to find ways to continue producing social media content when the theater was closed for events.
During my time as an intern at Boom Chicago, I was able to grow as an individual and also gain a much deeper insight into office etiquette. I was able to bring humor and comedy to my work routine every day, and I always felt as though I was becoming a better comedic writer with each task I completed. If you are like me, and have found yourself stressed and confused about finding an internship, I would recommend sitting down to think about how you can search for something that will be personally fulfilling (and which also connects to communication science, of course). In doing so, I was able to truly apply lessons I learned in my first year as a communication science student to marketing strategies in the office, while also finding out more about my own personal passions and interests. I would certainly recommend interning with Boom Chicago if you enjoy comedy, marketing and writing!
