Picture it- a sunny afternoon, you’re wearing your 70’s flared jeans as you roller skate down the street to ‘Jenny On The Block’. That’s how Ana Coto spent her afternoons mid-pandemic. The videos quickly went viral and inspired thousands to start roller skating- an activity that combines the quintessential feeling of freedom with groovy 70s and 80s hits. Seeing an opportunity to create something truly unique, WONDR Experiences’ founder Sarah Mendes, began planning WONDR’s newest business venture.
Let’s get to work- What did I do at WONDR?
As the marketing and communications intern, I mainly focused on promotion and project management. WONDR is still in its start-up phases so in addition to working in a very small and international team WONDR employs a lot of remote freelancers from all around the world. We had about 4 months from the idea to the scheduled opening day so our planning had to be top-notch. I was tasked with managing the internal and external communication flow and ensuring we remain on track to open in December 2021. Additionally, I participated in a photoshoot and a video shoot to promote our opening, as well as wrote promotional material and the press release package. Additionally, as I was in charge of our social media channels and community management I was creating content to promote Roller Dreams and answering any and all questions about our pink roller rink.
Here are a few behind-the-scenes photos I took during the Cool Creative video shoot.
All of our Roller Dreams came true!
“Roller Dreams opened on December 18th, 2021. At Roller Dreams you will go back in time to the golden era of roller skating! Decorated with vinyl, neon lights, disco balls, and a multitude of mirrors, Roller Dreams screams 80’s aesthetics. Whether you’re looking for a unique form of exercise, a day out with your friends or family, or you simply want to enjoy some 80’s nostalgia- Roller Dreams has something for everyone. What are you waiting for?! Go to rollerdreams.nl score your ticket, and join the disco fever that’s about to take Amsterdam by storm!”
A short snippet from the promotional copy I wrote which was used for the press release, website copy, and sent in as a briefing for several news outlets and magazines.
Every day is a new experience at WONDR!
While preparing for the opening of Roller Dreams was a big part of what I did throughout my internship I also got work on some incredibly smaller projects. From brand partnerships with Instac and &C, to Rolf Sanchezs’ music video, planning parties and movie premieres, to directing my own photoshoots. At WONDR no two days are alike, and I loved it. I would wholeheartedly recommend considering an internship at WONDR Experience. The small, and yet very international team, with diverse backgrounds, facilitate growth opportunities at every step. WONDR very much operates on the “Don’t know how to do it? Let’s figure it out together!” mentality. I couldn’t have hoped for a better learning experience- after all, that’s WONDR’s specialty! And if you’re still not convinced check out this reel I made encapsulating my 6 months at WONDR in 45 seconds!
