The beginning
It all started when I was back in Amsterdam and was searching for an internship. I really wanted to go to Barcelona – a vibrant and full of life city. Eventually, I got a contract there with my dream company – I was going to be an intern at a modelling agency! Going to this city and working into this industry..it couldn’t get better. However, a few days after I signed the contract, they told me there’s something happening in the company and there would be no internship. It was already late February, I was very disappointed and pessimistic. A month later I hadn’t found an internship neither in Barcelona, nor in Amsterdam and the Covid-19 crisis was getting worse and worse. My home country announced they are entering a state of emergency which meant that literally everything except supermarkets and pharmacies is closing down…for an indefinite period. I didn’t have much time to think and I booked one of the last flights.
Two days later I was back home, with my family but..still without an internship. The last chance for me to get one that aligns with the requirements of the university was to start in the beginning of April. But it was already near the end of March and this mission seemed impossible to me.
However, things always happen in the best moment and may be in an unexpected way but it is always the most appropriate one. I learnt that later. One afternoon I was checking the biggest job website in the country and I found an IT company that was searching for a marketing intern! Surely, I never imagined my first job would be at an IT company but it turned out it was the best first job experience ever!
My internship in a nutshell
Skilly the bot – that is a chat bot platform that gives you valuable insights in many fields and..it just feels like you’re chatting with a friend!
The company develops innovative chat bots for different industries. It is a small but quite successful one. Actually, because it is small, the atmosphere there is so friendly, relaxed and supportive that I wasn’t sure if this is a family business or an actual working environment between colleagues. Of course, I am kidding, though it should be mentioned that I did my internship completely online and yet, felt part of the team even from the first week. My tasks were various and always very interesting. I had to conduct small researches on different topics, find content for the chat bots, create them, write articles, make social media posts and develop marketing strategies. All of the projects that we had were perfectly synced between the teams and the pace was quite fast so I had to adapt quickly.
Three months passed by as a moment and at the end of the internship I felt sad, on the one hand, to be leaving the company but very inspired on the other, because I realized how much I’ve learned and in how many aspects my knowledge has expanded – from professional, to academical, practical and personal level it was all influenced.
A useful tip
If you’re unsure whether the internship is for you – remove all the doubts and give the best out of you. It will be much appreciated and in the end you will be proud that you tried something new.
In my opinion, a company that is in the IT industry is a very good choice for an internship as the world gets more and more digitized every day and even if you find yourself in the case of a world pandemic – don’t worry, there is plenty of work for you there!
Just follow your instinct and you’ll find the best internship for you… 🙂
