It might not be the first place you think of when choosing a company to do your internship at. I am almost 100% certain you have never even heard of it before. But here I am doing my Internship at Innerfire.
Innerfire is the company behind Dutchman Wim Hof, a.k.a. The Iceman. Wim has developed a simple yet effective method to become Happier, Healthier, and Stonger.
By doing breathing exercises, and taking ice-baths (which I know is a big turn off for many) you can boost your energy levels during the day, build up your resilience, and increase your mood. Most importantly it makes you feel alive. The company helps promote the method. It offers multiple online courses, workshops, travels etc. It also trains instructor so that they can teach the Method.
Of course I already knew that before starting my internship. I was aware of Wim Hof, and his very powerful method (I had done a weekend with Wim in 2017). How else could I have ended up there of all places. I think this is a very important point to make. Only consider internships at companies that you feel inspired about. If you are in the process of looking for an internship, I can recommend making a list of all the companies you feel good about, and then checking their webpages under career, to see if they have any available internships. If they don’t, then you can still send an open solicitation letter. Don’t be discouraged by it. Not trying is always a miss. I was lucky in finding my internship. I checked the webpage of Innerfire (www.wimhofmethod.com) and found that they had this internship on offer; looking for someone who could start in February. It was perfect for me, so I applied. It was the only internship I applied to, and the only one I needed to apply to.
I could show that I was passionate about the method by including a picture of myself in an ice-bath in my application. I would say it is very important to show in your application that you are passionate about it. I think that is one of the main reasons why I got this position. Besides you cannot fake passion in your application. Therefore, only by finding a company that lights your inner fire, will you be able to provide the best application, and increase your chances of getting an internship.
I believe this is a much much better approach then going mindlessly through endless lists of internship positions, of companies you don’t feel any connection with. Of course the task description of the internship should fit with what you want to learn, but don’t just take any company. Take one that feels right, that fits with you as a person, that inspires you. I learned a lot by going to a place that inspired me; a place that worked towards something that I could give my full support; a place that I had to some extent also idealised, but learned to see, and appreciate, for what it is really was. I wish you all the same.
