Day in the life of a Content Intern at Rocket Orange

Dear fellow Communication Science students,

As part of my Bachelor studies, I have been working as a Content Intern at Rocket Orange for the past four months. Rocket Orange is a start-up e-commerce company, which specializes in producing a variety of products. As a content intern, I have the opportunity to get to know the process of a product’s development in depth, as I have been involved in every step of the way. I understand that this explanation might be too vague, especially if you are unfamiliar with the e-commerce business model. Therefore, I will now describe a day in my life as part of the Rocket Orange team.

It is important to note that this position is quite dynamic and not every day looks the same. However, on average, I always start my mornings with a cup of coffee (with oat milk, of course) from the office’s machine. Although the taste isn’t spectacular, it does the job to awaken me quite well. Once that is done, I check my e-mail and look through my tasks for the day on the platform ‘Asana’, this helps me understand the workload for the day, as well as keeping me aware of incoming deadlines or meetings. At around 9:45 AM my teammates and I have a stand-up meeting three times a week, in which we inform each other of our tasks for the day, and sometimes for the entire week. I really appreciate these because it gives us a chance to catch up and understand what everyone is working on.

Over the course of the rest of the morning, I frequently work on my tasks in cooperation with the photographers or graphic designers. My duties often involve creating listing designs, developing photography assignments and providing feedback or writing listing texts. Among my other tasks there are sample evaluations, which consist of evaluating and providing feedback on a product I’m working on to make sure suppliers produce the best version of it. All of these tasks require special attention to detail, which is a skill I have greatly developed over the course of this internship.

At around 12:30, most of the office takes a break from work to have lunch together. This is a great opportunity to get to know your colleagues better, especially the people you are interning with. After lunch, some of my colleagues and I go outside to catch some time in the sun. If the weather allows it, we also sometimes go for a short stroll around to get some steps in for the day. This is a great activity because it allows you to disconnect for a short time from the office and work.

I usually concentrate all of my meetings in the second half of the day. This is because I have learnt that I am more productive in my other tasks during the morning. Thus, I try to schedule meetings during the afternoon because it allows me to have more time in the morning to work on my tasks. These meetings vary and can range from monthly meetings with my supervisor, follow-up or progress meetings of a project I’m working on, or ‘Learn about’ meetings, in which the entire office learns about the tasks of a specific department and gets to ask questions about it.

Overall, everyday is different at Rocket Orange, which is something I have valued during my time as an intern, because it never feels repetitive or automatic. Everyday, I get to learn new things and take on new tasks.
