Corporate Communication & Marketing intern at OpenUp

What does a day of a corporate communication and marketing intern at a scale-up for mental health look like? Driven by this question and a keen interest in corporate communication I applied as an intern for OpenUp and have worked there for the past 4 months. Here you can follow along my journey:

First, I want to introduce OpenUp to you. OpenUp is a mental health platform that offers various content on the topic of mental health: from personalized health check-ins to masterclasses, mindfulness sessions, webinars, and 1:1 consultations with professional psychologists. By providing all content on-demand on one platform, OpenUp wants to keep the barrier to mental health access as low as possible to reach everyone, as also calls its mission: “making mental health accessible to everyone!

On my first day at OpenUp, I was thrown into a completely new environment, without any previous working experience in an organization. During my first week, I familiarized myself with OpenUp’s product, the team, and their current projects. One of my biggest tasks throughout my internship was the planning, organizing, and execution of two HR events in Germany. At these HR events, OpenUp was present with a stand to gain presence in the HR field. My tasks entailed designing an attractive stand with OpenUp’s brand identity, as well as designing flyers and business cards for the entire team. Furthermore, I was asked to create a communication strategy on how to best approach HR professionals and how to communicate our brand identity. Luckily, I was able to apply many theories from my persuasive communication course as well as my corporate communication class.

Apart from the stand, we also had a speaker slot in Stuttgart, where our founder had a speech about the topic of whether mental health is the employer’s responsibility. For the speech, I assisted him with the writing process as well as creating supporting slides for his talk.

Another project of mine during my internship at OpenUp was my research on the most effective cold message outreach on LinkedIn. I tested three different message types and how they affected HR professionals’ interest in scheduling a demo call.

All in all, the four-month at OpenUp flew by and I am sad to say goodbye to my team this evening at my goodbye borrel. I could have not asked for a better first internship experience. I am sad to say goodbye but I am also looking forward to my new adventure when I can say: Bonjour Sciences Po Reims!
