A morning on the island

It was just a normal morning on the island. The birds were singing, the sun was shining bright unleashed by nonexistent clouds and the slight wind was making it almost possible not to sweat from the heat. I had already finished my breakfast, trained at the gym and gone for an early swim at the local beach. It was now time to go to work. And on this particular day i was very particularly excited. My colleague and I were going to volunteer for our human resource department. We were about to carry out a job interview at a local university for two of the front office positions at our company. Our hotel is quite popular in the area and therefore many students applied for the job. I was very intrigued to hear their perspectives and ambitions. The company car arrived and we took off to our destination. On the way there my colleague and I were discussing the questionnaire we would use. I was tempted to look away from the piece of paper and look at the countless waves revealed behind the palms on the highway. Anyway, we soon arrived. One of the university supervisors welcomed us and lead us through the university corridors. It was a tourism university and next to the campus building they had built their own fully functional hotel for training purposes of the students. I was truly amazed by this act. We were then accommodated in our rooms. Then, the interviewees started entering the room. Each of them spent 10 minutes talking with us, while we intentionally tried to put pressure on them to test them in stressful situations which are common in the hospitality business. What left me truly wandering in my head, were their responses when asked what are the dreams they have. The first boy said he wanted to work as a bartender one day. I genuinely thought that his English probably did him no favor at that moment. Then, the second interviewee came and said she wanted to work on a cruise ship. And then the next girl said she just wanted to take care of her parents failing to hide her sincerity behind her otherwise professional facial expression. And although they all had seemingly small dreams, they all brought great happiness and emotion with themselves. This brought clouds of questions over my head. This was just a normal morning on the island.
