5 months into my internship at The Social Hub I can assure that I have a more complete understanding of what TSH is and what it stands for. It has been an enjoyable experience through which I have learnt more about hospitality and about corporate communication, as well as developed skills that will help me in my professional future. Below, I will go over what a typical Monday during my internship looked like for me to hopefully inspire others who might consider taking up an internship at The Social Hub.
Morning
Every morning I arrive at work at around 9.00. I usually settle down in the flex working area. To begin my morning I look through my meetings for the day, check if I have any emails that need immediate action, and look at the weekly communications calendar in preparation for my meetings later in the day.
Every Monday at 10.00 I have a meeting for Intern Connect. This is an initiative for the interns in the People & Culture team where together we create content and online events for interns across the TSH locations. In these meetings we discuss upcoming events and decide on content. If we have an event that week, the meeting can be a bit more hectic as we try to finalize all details. I really liked this initiative as it was completely intern led and allowed me to learn about event management and collaborate with other interns.
At 10.30 I have my weekly catch up meeting with my manager. During these meetings we usually discuss the weekly calendar and make decisions about what content should be published that week. We also discuss upcoming articles and campaigns to see what has to be prepped. After my meeting I take time to adjust the weekly calendar and prepare to work on the content that will published later that week. At 12.00 me and the other interns go for lunch. During my internship there were around 25 other interns at the office which was nice, at least 4-5 of us are always available to go for lunch together.
Afternoon
After lunch I work on the articles that need to be written for that week, after which I send them to my manager for the final check or depending whether or not the article corresponds to a specific campaign we might send it to our freelancer copywriter for edits.
Depending on the week I work on a variety of tasks or have different meetings. Some weeks I have meetings with different department leads for the creation of their department portal in the internal communication platform; other weeks I have meetings to prep for the monthly community call which preparation I support; sometimes we also have meetings to train different locations on how to use our internal communication platform. These activities will usually take up most of my afternoon, but of course some weeks are busier than others.
Highlights
Some highlights of my internship experience at TSH have been working for Intern Connect. As part of it we had to go shopping and then do some arts & crafts to create goodie bags for interns, which we the assembled. This was an activity that broke from my routine which I really enjoyed. Other highlights include the weekly Thursday drinks which were often themed (e.g., Tiki, Back to the Future, 70’s, ABBA). I also enjoyed Wellness Wednesdays, where we would have smoothies at the office for breakfast and could get a massage throughout the day at the office. I also enjoyed being offered discounts at the different TSH locations which allowed me to travel to locations such as Paris and Berlin.
Overall, I would recommend an internship at TSH as it is a fun fulfilling experience.
