My name is Hulbert and I am currently completing my internship in the bustling city of Singapore! I hope to share with you what life is like in the big city and the new skills I have learned on the job. I am currently interning at ATE Integrated Communications; our office is located at Tanjong Pagar, right at the heart of the central business district. My day starts at eight in the morning as I join the morning rush on the way to work. The metro and buses are always on time and it is so convenient for me to travel to the office. Walking amidst skyscrapers on the way to work makes one feel profound. It emboldens you with confidence before you start your day. I walk through the doors of Capital Tower and I am ready to start my day.
My day begins with media monitoring, which consists of scanning local news for articles relevant to the client. It is my version of reading the daily newspaper! I enjoy this part of my day as it helps me keep up to date while helping my client at the same time. Next, I curate and schedule social media posts for my client. Managing a client’s social media accounts is an interesting task as it requires putting oneself in the client’s shoes. Aside from that, I assist my colleagues in a variety of other tasks for the clients under their care. As an account coordinator intern, I am eager to get get involved in as many projects as possible. My colleagues have something new for me to work on every day. It is the best possible scenario as I am learning many new skills from colleagues with different areas of expertise.
My most interesting experience thus far was when I got the opportunity to work with the CEO of the company to draft a press release for my client. We worked closely to create a press release for the client’s campaign. Over the course of a few drafts, I managed to learn how to write a press release in language which was appropriate for the media. My CEO has many years of experience in the industry and interacting with the press. She took the time out of her schedule to teach me what it takes for news to be picked up by the press. I am extremely grateful for this learning experience as I am certain that this knowledge will help me in my future endeavours.
Interning in the central business district in Singapore is a unique experience in itself. It feels electric, walking through the streets with the rest of the workforce. The people around me are driven. They are always on the move, always looking for opportunities to add value. I find this to be motivating. The competitiveness drives me to do more, to achieve more. I was born here in Singapore, but coming back here to pursue an internship was a completely new experience for me. As I come to the end of my internship, I am nothing but grateful. I am grateful for the opportunities I have been given and I welcome the challenges of the future.
