A Day in the Life of a UX/UI Intern: Lessons from the Field

My Internship Experience

“As a UX/UI intern at DTT, a lively tech company in Amsterdam, every day brings new and exciting challenges. Combining creativity, technical skills, and continuous learning creates a stimulating work environment. Here is a peek into a typical day at the office, along with some valuable tips and insights I’ve gained from my internship experience.”

“Be prepared for anything! Your internship may bring unexpected opportunities and lengthy interviews, so staying ready and adaptable is crucial. Keep your portfolio updated, stay current with design trends, and hone your skills continuously to be ready to seize any chance that comes your way. Being prepared demonstrates professionalism and positions you to make the most of your internship experience.”

What does my morning look like?

My day starts early, around 8:30 AM ~ 9:00 AM. After grabbing some morning snacks, I head to my desk to review the day’s agenda. I check all the messages on Slack, plan what I must do today, and then update my priority tasks on the Morning Stand-up channel. Every morning, there is a stand-up meeting with the team on Monday morning. This brief session is crucial for aligning our tasks, discussing any roadblocks, and setting the tone for the day. Each member shares their progress and plans, fostering a collaborative atmosphere.

Giving Tacos!!!

One unique and fun aspect of the culture at DTT is our “taco shout-out” system on Slack. If I get any help from my colleagues, I can always tag their names with a taco emoji to show gratefulness! This simple gesture goes a long way in fostering a positive and supportive work environment. It makes expressing thanks easy and fun, encouraging a culture of appreciation and teamwork. Seeing a flurry of taco emojis in our Slack channels always brings a smile to everyone’s face and reminds us of the collaborative spirit that drives our projects forward.

Through this internship, I’ve learned several key lessons:

Remember the following points:

1. Embrace Feedback: Constructive criticism is invaluable as it helps you grow and refine your work.

2. Stay Curious: Continuous learning and staying updated with industry trends is crucial in the ever-evolving UX/UI design field.

3. Collaborate: Effective communication and teamwork are essential. Different perspectives can lead to innovative solutions.

4. Balance Creativity and Practicality: While being creative is important, practical constraints must also be considered to ensure feasibility.

5. User-Centric Design: Always consider the user. Understanding user behaviour and needs is fundamental to creating successful designs.

I had a great experience at DTT. I learned a lot and grew both professionally and creatively. I highly recommend that students seeking an internship in UX/UI design look for opportunities in dynamic and collaborative environments. Internships like this can be transformative and set you up for a successful design career.
