I never imagined myself working in a creative fashion agency and especially in the advertising and digital marketing department. This is due to the fact that I was more deeply involved in other aspects of the communication domain. However, I am glad to have thoroughly enjoyed my internship.
In February 2021 I had the enormous luck to have had the chance to intern at a parent company for several vintage clothing stores in Amsterdam. I ended up working at the company for 3 months and enjoyed experiencing all sides to the sustainable fashion world that I never had any clue about.
It was my first internship and my first confrontation with the fashion world. As an intern, I was part of the digital marketing and e-commerce team. This department was responsible for all online elements of the brand. We were responsible for the upkeep of the webshop, the growth of the Instagram page, finding collaborations with influencers and advertising the products being sold.
I am glad to say that I learnt many skills and had many memorable moments that I still look back on to this day! For example, the first time I used a steamer, the first time I successfully edited a picture on Photoshop, the feeling of having clothing being sold after you put hard work into advertising it, the feeling of participating in photoshoots and getting to see all the behind the scenes of a fashion shoot. But what I also reminisce about is the team; I was lucky enough to work with fun and positive-minded people. Everyday there was something to laugh about and we never took anything too seriously. This is due to the fact that the company had an open culture and from day one I felt accepted by the team.
I was also grateful to the fact that all interns were present in some brainstorm sessions which resulted in a great feeling of involvement which in turned motivated us to work even harder.
What particularly attracted me to work for this company is their focus on sustainability. In fact, I am very passionate about the world of sustainability and how we can all help out the world a little at a time.
Based on my three-month internship at the company I now know that the world of fashion, advertising and digital marketing has caught my eyes and that I would like to continue on this path in my future career.
Lastly, I greatly enjoyed the chance of doing an internship because it is a big learning experience and I believe that more programs at the UvA should require students to do an internship because it is a great learning experience, professionally as well as personal.
