Interning at a CleanTech Company

Good luck, I heard it’s so difficult right now”. If you are looking for an internship during Corona times, chances are you heard something along these lines. But don’t let others discourage you. Everyone makes their own experiences, and you will be fine if you prepare yourself well and practice to sell your skillset. I admit when I was looking for an internship position in December, I was already a bit late, and it wasn’t easy since there were very few internship positions. But in the end, I was invited to several interviews and finally found an internship at EVBox!

EVBox? What do they do?

You might have not heard of EVBox but if you live in Amsterdam, you probably walked past one of their products which are scattered all around the city. This scale-up is the European leader for electric vehicle charging solutions, not only in terms of hardware (so the chargers) but also in terms of software (the magic that makes those chargers form a network). EVBox is growing quickly and will have installed 1 million charging stations by 2023 worldwide. While I will be interning at EVBox, the company will be preparing to go public so there is a lot of changes going on.

Why did I decide to work at EVBox?

One of my criteria for an internship was to work for a company that is future-orientated and cares for the environment. Not only did I want to contribute to make a positive impact, but I also wanted to meet like-minded professionals. Moreover, I’ve worked in very international environments before and I loved those experiences, so I wanted to join an international team and with over 70 nationalities present at EVBox, I think I won’t be disappointed. Finally, I wanted to work for a relatively young company that specialises on a future trend. While the future of transportation might see a combination of hydrogen and battery powered vehicles, electric cars are certainly here to stay.

What I will be doing at EVBox

I will join the company as a research and data intern. This role is part of the marketing team which includes over 50 professionals with sub teams, each specializing on a certain task (e.g. branding, PR, product marketing etc.). I will be working in the Growth & Performance team, which is responsible for anything data related, from developing the website, reporting, tracking, acquisition, and marketing automation. It is one of the most important teams as it is responsible for giving the whole marketing team accountancy, an often difficult task in communications. In my role specifically, I will be working on conducting marketing research to gather customer insights. These can be then be used to build customer journeys and personas or to support account-based marketing strategies.

My first impressions of EVBox

One of the reasons I went with EVBox and not another company was the first impression I got during the interview. The questions were interesting and showed competence, something that wasn’t always the case in each interview I did. While I haven’t started working yet, I got to visit the office to pick up my working equipment and found myself surrounded by plants everywhere I looked. It’s such a beautiful place to work! I now completed my first week of onboarding which was great and very insightful. The company really allows employees to be their own authentic selves in a working environment where there is little hierarchical thinking. I’m excited to get started on my new tasks and meeting my co-workers!
