Hey everyone, I am Beatrice Megazzini, a third-year Communication Science student at the University of Amsterdam. From March 18 till now I have been interning at Amberscript B.V.
Amberscript is a scale-up company that sells transcription services using AI-powered software, converting audio to text. I knew prior to starting that I was interested in the world of technology but with no real direction as to what position I wanted to work in. Amberscript presented itself after a hard and tormented 4 months of looking for internships, and I took the plunge, interning for a sales consultant position, for the Italian and Spanish market.
While never personally feeling comfortable with public-speaking I never would have seen myself working in a similar position, yet I decided to try it out anyway, and I am glad I did. Working in the sales department with very exuberant and goal-oriented colleagues was a motivation for me to keep improving myself and meet targets.
DAILY ROUTINE
Talking about meeting targets, my day was never short of something to do. I started my day at 9 am on a Monday, with the weekly monday meeting. This meeting set everyones expectations for the week and was conducive to understanding what my tasks for the week would entail. My work tasks varied from calling clients interested in the service, acting as their key reference for the company, to doing more qualitative research like scouting events Amberscript could attend, or doing some “prospecting” one of the terminologies that I learned along the way, which consisted of finding clients contact information and reporting it. These tasks were all relevant to Amberscript’s 2024-2025 business strategy. These tasks helped me acquire new skills, and learn how to use different applications that I had never used prior, like Hubspot, Linkedin Sales Navigator, and Lusha.
Moreover, my job while independent was also dependent on my colleagues. I have worked closely with the Operations team to ensure the clients were satisfied with the product and that the deadlines were constantly met. While lots of time was dedicated to work, it wasn’t all work and no play. The company culture at Amberscript is very open, with positive energy at all times, and an Amberscript favorite, the implemented weekly “coffee walks”. This was a 30-minute walk that we could go on during work hours with a new colleague every week, a nice way to take some downtime from the screen.
CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS
While my experience at Amberscript was a positive one, it came with its challenges. For one, while I was given clear guidance on my tasks, my work, and the company were very dependent on the work I did, given the scale-up culture, everything you work on is of fundamental importance, and that also means lots of responsibility, which was at times a lot to handle considering my Internship supervisor was not always there to help.
TIPS & TRICKS
To end it on a positive note, I will offer some guidance and quick tips I wish I had known before starting my Internship
- Start looking for internships early, even 4 months may not be enough time
- Try to build your resume, your experiences really make a difference in the selection process
- Don’t be scared at the idea of working for a start-up or scale-up, you will be given lots of responsibility and independence, but that is also why you will learn and gain skills that you wouldn’t elsewhere.
- Dont be scared to try something that is out of your comfort zone, you might find its actually something your good at!
