An internship to remember

Hi everyone! I’m Irene, a second year communication science student and for the past six month I had the opportunity to intern as a community manager and social media content creator at Equals.

Equals is an organization that strives for gender equality in the workforce, empowering women in their professional and personal development. To do so, it offers courses, events and networking opportunities for women to meet, learn and grow. The company is based on three pillars: the academy, the community and visibility. It offers different tech courses meant for women who want to start their journey in tech from any kind of background. It has a member club, which is the vibrant and lively part of the everyday life at Equals. In fact, the office is the clubhouse where members come everyday to work and participate to events. The last but not least part, the visibility, has its peak with the yearly Role Model campaign, where inspiring women working in tech, leadership, founders and other specialists are showcased on billboards and posters around cities in The Netherlands.

After spending weeks looking for an internship I stumbled upon their job post on LinkedIn and I immediately recognized the company. This is because last year, while biking around the city I noticed one of the many posters for the past Role Model campaign and it immediately caught my attention. So I looked up and saved them in a little drawer in my brain with the things to keep in mind for the future. Turns out, it was a great idea. I decided to apply as soon as I saw the post and in February I started this adventure!

As a community manager, I had direct contact with the community members, helping them with any necessities they might had. I took care of organizing events from the introduction call to the actual event set up on the day of the event, also taking care of the promotion on the three channels used to set up the ticketing service, to communicate with the community and the general public.

As a social media content creator, I worked with a team of two other people to plan, create, design and post on the social media platforms of the company. The calendar included event promotion, branding and inspirational content and we were given a lot of freedom in the design part always considering branding guidelines.

Overall this internship gave me the opportunity gain a lot of experience and to connect with a lot of inspiring women. I believe to have met incredible people during these six months and I will surely bring this experience with me in the future!
