Ever wondered what it is to work in fashion? No matter who you ask, the answer will always be “It is not as glamorous as you think.” Being in the fashion industry is not for the weak. The amount of competition on all levels of this branch is immense and people go to extreme lengths to stay relevant in this modern ever-changing landscape. Trends change faster than a runway model changes outfits. So how does a 20-something-year-old survive in these conditions?
Network Like Your Life Depends On It
It is not about what you know, but who you know. And this is an important phrase to remember, especially in fashion. We are communication experts, so employ every strategy you know to make a name for yourself! Talk to people in any possible situation. As a part of my duties in Ginger Aardbei, a vintage luxury clothing brand, I played a key role in organizing a Christmas Pop-Up store at a central location in Amsterdam. There I met models, influencers, photographers, and many other fashion enthusiasts sharing the same passion. I took the opportunity to approach them, engage in a friendly conversation and always present myself and my interests in this industry. You never know who could give you their contact or offer you a job, even a small one. In fashion you have to build your way up. So putting yourself out there is definitely the right approach!
Set Boundaries
People who want to work in fashion are usually willing to do anything to succeed. However, it is important to know when to say “No.” I often took on tasks that were not my main responsibilities because of my eagerness to learn, but the growing To-Do list got in the way of my mental health. That is why setting boundaries with your employer is a crucial characteristic anyone who wants to work in fashion needs to achieve. It might be scary to speak up to a higher-up when you want to impress them, but trust me that people in fashion appreciate those who are able to stand their ground rather than comply with orders. In the end, fashion is about breaking conventional rules, so why should you silence yourself?
Mistakes Are Your Best Friends
Never let any “failure” set you back from achieving your dreams. We are interns, we are taking our first steps into our professional careers and there are many lessons we need to learn, often through our mistakes. Just make sure you do not repeat them. Ask questions when you are unsure about a post you are writing or a client you are approaching. My boss always told me: “My job is to prepare you for the real world.” Take any opportunity to gain insight into the area you are interested in. Learn from others’ mistakes too – ask your colleagues about their job path and what knowledge they have gained along the way. Our experiences shape who we are, so allow mistakes to be your best friends and embrace their role in your career.
Your internship is the first stop on your journey in fashion. Make friends, make mistakes, but do not lose yourself. Be authentic and you will attract the right people and opportunities your way. Discover what you like, but also what you do not like. Be curious and open to continuous learning. Know that Communication Science has given you the engine of knowledge. Now get in the driver’s seat and go!
