While working in a start-up, the team is constantly growing and evolving. During the past few months of my internship, the team got progressively bigger and one Wednesday everyone got the news they were waiting for: we are moving into a much bigger office. Exactly one week later, we were loading all desks and computers into the rented truck and were driving to see the space for the first time ever.
After a long and particularly sweaty move, everyone picked their places, hooked their computers, and got to enjoy the sunlight coming from all 36 windows at the office. As we were situated on the ground floor, we got to meet all our neighbors fast and leave quite the impression (by constantly going in and out through the windows). Everyone was super excited about the new beginning we were getting and the possibility of expansion.
On a Sunday morning, my phone started ringing with 3 missed calls. I heard my manager’s voice apologizing for calling on a weekend and then the phrase: “We’ve been robbed so if you don’t mind bringing your laptop tomorrow.” I couldn’t help but let out a sound that was something between a laugh and a sneeze.
A short overview of the situation: the area we moved in had reports of criminal activity. Someone forgot to put on the office alarm and the burglars tried to make their way through one of our windows unsuccessfully but managed to get through the back door. The result of the break-in was 5 stolen computers, one brand new laptop, and several destroyed cables in the process.
Needless to say, the following Monday morning was quite hectic, and the mood was definitely off. For the next few weeks, the majority of us continued working on our personal devices, the alarm was turned on almost religiously until eventually some people got work laptops. Every morning we would spend around 15 minutes on cable management and connecting laptops and monitors and mouses and keyboards. The plus side: we got a lot of complimentary pity snacks from our neighboring companies.
With time, everything started going back to normal, we continued welcoming interns and even cracked a few jokes about the situation. This whole experience has put a challenge on us as a team and we somehow got through it, with a little confusion, a lot of cable management, and a couple of lighthearted jokes. While my internship had a lot of amazing experiences worth writing about, this one has been the most unexpected and interesting one!
Getting robbed: The internship experience I never thought I would get.
