Play Hard, Work Harder: An Internship Tale at Carhartt.

Hard-working. Authentic. High-quality. Durable. Warmth. Familiarity. Community.

What company comes to mind when you see these words? Is it Carhartt?

Carhartt is Rich in History.

I know you’ve seen people wear Carhartt when you turn a corner, in every step, in every smile. For me, I have known Carhartt since my first breath of fresh air, and It’s all thanks to Pipi (this is what I call my dad)! As a lover of automotives and getting his hands dirty, he would always try to find Carhartt garments to accompany his every move when spicing up his vehicles.

When I found out that Carhartt had an opening for a Marketing internship, I could not help but rush to apply. All the responsibilities entailed, including daily operations of brand promotion, developing sales items for our B2B partners, preparing trade shows, presentations, and promotional campaigns, as well as photoshoots, piqued my interest in the best way possible. It’s everything I wanted! Not only was I able to be a part of such an amazing company, I was looking forward to the experiences I could gain in order to reach my goal of becoming an all-around Marketing professional.

When I received the phone call to go to the office to have a second round of interviews, it felt as if time had stopped.

Carhartt is Trustworthy.

Honestly, I could not be more nervous on my first day. Racks filled with clothing items, floors all filled with opened samples of boxes, and printed graphics of campaigns everywhere, I could not believe that I was going to be a part of Carhartt for the next 6 months. But all of that came to a halt.

Don’t get me wrong, the excitement and happiness continued to fill the air but I had to immediately adjust to the fast-paced work ethic of my team. From the first day, my team trusted me completely with all of the responsibilities that they gave to me. I started by mostly doing a lot of daily marketing, technical, and operational work such as placing important orders for our partners and distributors. Being in contact with PR agencies, journalists, and modelling agencies. My daily tasks then were added to managing brand ambassadors and their needs, whilst helping with sales forecasting and presentations. Then, the highlight of it all, I had the opportunity to be directly involved in all of the photoshoots going on at Carhartt for their upcoming season’s release whilst still doing all of the operational and creative work I had started with!

The trust they had placed in me gave me a lot of relief and pressure at the same time. I was always being pushed out of my comfort zone.

“What if I don’t fulfil their expectations?” “What if I do something wrong?”  “I am just a mere intern…”

At the end of the day, all my worries were always washed away. Having such a trustworthy team gave me the confidence to do my work as best as I could. Sure, there were times that I slipped, but my team never failed to remind me that I was chosen for a reason. Their trust is what kept me going.

(The company even implemented my research into their own brand guidelines!)

Carhartt is Durable.

Carhartt has taught me that it’s okay to not have a routine.

Every single time I go into the office, I never know what to expect. One day, we’ll be looking at data and trends, and on another, we will be sorting through piles of clothes and dressing mannequins. Or maybe, it would be a day filled with brainstorming and creative output for our campaigns. This internship has taught me to be the most flexible and durable version of myself! Carhartt taught me to believe in my capabilities but never settle for being “just enough”.

The Marketing team at Carhartt involved me in everything that they did, and because of this, I gained both hard skills (research, data collection, professional usage of Microsoft and Adobe programs) as well as soft skills (communication, collaboration, adaptability).

If you are interested in the garment industry and are looking for an internship filled with fun, and colour, I 100% recommend for you have your internship experience at Carhartt.

P.S. You’ll have a lot of team bonding activities and outings! What a fresh breath of air away from your desk and laptop. 🙂

Work harder, because Carhartt already provides you with enough time to play!
