As a Marcom intern, what have I learned?

Useful quick takeaway information: My internship company is TP Vision (Amsterdam Headquarters). It is an e-commerce organization, branding, and marketing Philips products (TV and Soundbar).

My Role and Responsibilities

From February onwards, I joined the marketing communication department in this organization as a marketing communication intern. My main responsibilities were to manage projects, ensure seamless progress, and deliver tasks on time. I also helped in the design, advertisements, and marketing operations. Besides, I hosted weekly meetings for managers from other countries and external stakeholders, while I presented our weekly work and schedule to them. During the internship, I learned a lot of practical skills, such as how to write a sound email or how to successfully facilitate our teamwork, just to name a few. Meanwhile, I also felt my communication skills improve a lot because I had to communicate with European local representatives and colleagues with various cultural backgrounds. Interestingly, I would recommend mastering this skill: writing a good email. This is because I realized that most of the miscommunication or misunderstanding came from wrong texts, grammar, tones, and size of paragraphs in emails. Thus, it would be beneficial to learn and advance this skill, which could definitely help us for future career paths.

My experience in this internship

There were many times that I felt so pleased and honored during my internship. I remembered that after my first month, my manager took me to several marketing activities, which were important and prominent to our business. For example, TPVision Life was one of our product lunch events, where many stakeholders, such as the CEO of Mediamarkt, the CEO of Royal Philips, and some famous Dutch journalists, visited us. At that event, I met so many professionals in communication as well as marketing fields, which is why I felt honored and thankful to my team and manager. Second, I went on several business trips to see the product shooting at one of our agencies. There was no denying that this experience event made my week at that time. It was my first time understanding how advertisements, videos, and CGI, were created and applied in real life. Our agency even let us try shooting, editing, and playing with screens. Third, our team usually went to team gatherings once two weeks, which build strong relationships with each other and even increase our productivity. This is because each time when we had that gathering, we usually felt energized in the following days. We also realized that these events make us trust and rely on each other more.

Conclusion

After my internship, I learned and developed many new skills, and simultaneously, I understood how to apply academic theories to practical cases. From my perspective, it is recommended to do an internship at a big organization because they would have more budget, such as dinner gatherings, e-commerce activities, etc., where we could learn a lot of practical and interesting matters. These have, indeed, broadened my horizon, and allowed me to imagine my future career.
