Follow my journey of purposeful impact at TOMS

Dear readers, my name is Rania Chaoui. I am studying Communication Sciences at the UvA. As part of one of my courses, I had the chance to work as a digital marketing intern at the fashion brand “TOMS” from April 3rd to July 2nd.

As part of my internship at TOMS, I wanted to share my experiences and insights with you. From the moment I started that internship, I knew I was about to begin a meaningful journey with a company that aligned with my values ​​and passion for making a difference.

Before starting to describe my role at TOMS, I wanted to introduce you to the brand shortly. TOMS is a shoe brand that gives 1/3 of its profits to grassroots organisations. As a B corporation, TOMS is more than involved with social and environmental performances.

Now, let’s talk about my proudest internship achievements: As a digital marketing intern, my role at TOMS revolved around creating impactful email newsletters for the EMEA market. I have assisted in building, designing and creating the content of these newsletters. In addition to that, I have learned how to create e-commerce campaigns and analyse campaign performance using Google Analytics. Finally, I have conducted market research to gain insights into newsletter development and website improvement.

I must admit that I have enjoyed every moment of my internship experience at TOMS. Every day brought new challenges and learning opportunities. The team has been very supportive and nice to me, guiding me and allowing me to take responsibility for my work. One of the most exciting and rewarding moments was seeing that there were more and more newsletter subscribers.

A typical day at TOMS is full of creativity and collaboration. We start by brainstorming ideas for newsletter stories: The products and visuals displayed must be chosen carefully. The content has to be written conscientiously as well to ensure alignment with TOMS’ mission and values and especially to maintain TOMS’ voice. We then engage in the design process and translations, as the newsletters are being sent to France, Germany, The Netherlands and the UK.

Looking back, this internship taught me a valuable lesson and broadened my understanding of the marketing industry. TOMS’ commitment to ethical practices increased my understanding of making responsible business decisions and gaining the trust of customers and stakeholders.

I highly recommend this internship at TOMS because of my transformative experience. The opportunity to be exposed to real-world marketing challenges and get through them with enthusiasm, hope and creativity.

Now that my internship has ended, I am filled with gratitude for the amazing experience and personal growth I have had so far. My journey at TOMS proved my passion for marketing and inspired me to pursue a career as a marketing consultant. I aim to apply the knowledge and skills I acquired during my internship to my future business and to leave a lasting impression in this field.
