Hi everyone! My name is Isa Wolf, I am a third year student Communication Science at the UvA. From October 2022 to Januari 2023 I had the pleasure of interning at book publishing company Singel Uitgeverijen. Based in a beautiful building in the centre of Amsterdam, where you’re surrounded by amazing books from all different kinds of (Dutch) authors made this experience one to never forget.
Singel Uitgeverijen has different funds; being Nijgh & Van Ditmar, Querido, De Arbeiderspers, Atheneum, De Geus, Volt, Love Books and Brave New Books. This company has over 90 employees. Their first fund, Nijgh & Van Ditmar, originated in 1837. Can you imagine how much history has been written in this company!
Singel Uitgeverijen has a broad variation of authors from which a large part are foreign, from which their books have been translated to Dutch.
As an intern, I was part of the marketing & publicity department. I was given the independence to make my own social media content, create marketing plans and work on projects with authors. I collaboratively worked on projects with other employees of the Marketing & Publicity departement and after a short while it already felt like I knew them for much longer.
I started to plan and organise my work load receiving constructive feedback from my supervisor learning on how to improve my performance, which has been extremely .
Interning at Singel Uitgeverijen has imparted me with great marketing skills and qualities, providing me with greater knowledge and understanding of the book publishing business explicitly relating to marketing, sales and press relations. I established newfound confidence in myself and my abilities strengthening my career development – which is one of the most important to do an internship in general.
I had to show responsibility, communication skills and self-motivation while working at home. Taking initiative during meetings established trust and reliability between my supervisor and I and I always felt like I was a real contribution to the team.
I have become well-acqainted with most of the employees at Singel Uitgeverijen. The employees are very kind and helpful, and there is enough room to express your needs and expectations. If you want to learn something particular, your colleagues will go out of their way to make sure that you will!
Practical experience is the best, and interning at Singel Uitgeverijen has given the hands-on experience of what it is like working in the marketing and publicity sector.
Overall, I would definitely recommend you to do your internship at Singel Uitgeverijen.
This internship has been a valuable one in that I have learned how to work with many types of people in many types of situations.
