My PR internship at Das Mag

Love being creative, love social media and looking for an internship? Keep on reading!

Founded in 2015, Das Mag is a publishing company that felt like the Dutch book world could improve a lot. Their mission? To produce fewer books, with more care. But how is that possible? Well, by creating room for each book to flourish AND by using creative marketing strategies on social media Das Mag has managed to sell over 150,000 copies of a debut novel.

My daily activities

As a PR intern at Das Mag, I was able to support Das Mag on a daily basis. In the mornings this included, answering emails from customers and participating in the weekly PR meeting. In this meeting, all relevant books are discussed, and ideas/strategies are thought out, after which everyone knows their tasks for the week.

After lunch, I usually started working on my daily tasks. My main duty was to maintain the social media channels for Das Mag. This means that I was responsible for everything related to the social media account of Das Mag. During busy weeks, the Das Mag Instagram account can post up to twice a day for seven days a week. Before posting, however, I draft a version of the week wherein I discuss what books I want to highlight on our social media, how I want to highlight it, for example by making visuals or taking pictures myself, and when I want to post. This is then discussed in a weekly meeting between my internship supervisor, a colleague and me.

A creative strategy

During my internship, for example, we decided to give away free copies of one of our books at a train station in the Netherlands. This was done because the main character in the book goes on train rides, and the cover of the book resembles the windows on a train. For this train station strategy, we came up with a post showing the book travelling through the country, with a note that the books were about to arrive at their final destination. A day after, we posted on our Instagram stories that the book had arrived hinting at a specific station, where our followers could get their hands on the book. This idea took several days to plan, and multiple people to put together. As it was deemed a success, we planned a similar strategy for our followers in Belgium.

Now back to my daily tasks! After I have posted on the social media account, I start on my PR and marketing duties, which usually involve doing a lot of research. This is all sorted together in several lists of influencers, authors, and media which I then discuss with my internship supervisor. After which, I reach out to everyone for a possible collaboration. To end the day, I take some time to search online for what readers are saying about our books.

So are you looking for a PR internship and are you a creative social media addict?

Then look no further, Das Mag is the place for you!
