My experience in the oldest communications agency in Estonia

It has now been a week since my last day at my internship for one of the oldest communication agencies in Estonia – Alfa-Omega Communications. It is now time to reflect back and bring you the best bits of my internship. When I first arrived at the beautiful office in Tallinn Old Town, I was a bit nervous thinking I’m underqualified for the task ahead. However, I was instantly thrown into the deep end dealing with clients such as the Ministry of Environment, Flixbus etc. That proved to be so exciting and so rewarding that the nervousness disappeared into thin air and from that point onwards I started to really enjoy the work I was doing. Now I will tell you guys a bit more about some cool projects I was involved in.

Firstly, the best project I did was for the Estonian Tourism Association. They needed us to visit different hotels, restaurants and attractions all over Estonia for free and then we’d rate them based on the questionnaire we designed. The answers to that questionnaire will later be translated into hospitality ratings through statistical analysis. This project was super fun because it enabled me to travel around my home country that I had been away from for a while and also really utilize the statistical analysis classes that we study here at UvA.

Secondly, the project that thought me the most was developing a communication strategy for the Ministry of Environment regarding the safe storage of radioactive waste and the building of a storage facility necessary for the safekeeping of all radioactive waste in Estonia. This showed me in depth how to build up a communication strategy and how to utilize content analysis, public opinion surveys, focus groups etc. We just managed to finish a 50-page strategy before my last day at the job.

Last but not least, I also enjoyed a different side of a communications agency – organizing events. For our client, Flixbus, I was tasked to organize their 2nd anniversary in the Baltics. I had a blast talking to different venues, caterers, influencers, and party hosts to create an unforgettable event for the company. It was a nice break from all the statistical analyses and press releases!

Overall, it was a great experience for me as a student in terms of all the knowledge I gained about the industry and how it operates. I was a bit nervous at the beginning but after being thrown into different projects straightaway I found that things I have studied have actually stuck on and proved to be a lot of help. Kudos for that, UvA!
