Ups and Downs as a Communications Intern

Hi everyone,

Wow, I genuinely feel like this was the shortest and longest 5 and a half months of my entire life! I experienced so many emotions, both good and bad, learned an immense amount of knowledge that will benefit me in the future, networked like crazy, and even had the amazing opportunity to travel to IBIZA!

Yeah, I know … Ibiza, I can’t even believe it myself. Let’s start there since that was probably my biggest “up” throughout my entire internship experience. During the first two months of my internship, my internship host worked remotely from Ibiza, since it’s a Digital Marketing Agency, this was extremely easy to do. My internship host, who by the way, I knew already before beginning to work there, promised me he would fly me out so we could work remotely together. Of course I did not believe him at first. One day out of the blue, during a zoom call, he announces that he is buying tickets for the upcoming week. I was shocked and so beyond grateful. So, I went, for a week, it was the best place on Earth I could have worked from. Most importantly, I was finally able to work with my boss, face to face, for the first time since beginning my internship. I’d say we were the most productive there, which seems bizarre since we were literally in paradise. I was really able to learn a lot and participate in all the zoom calls together and be immersed in the entire experience.

Now, let’s turn to a “down”. By the end, I realized that sitting in the office, 9 am-18 pm, 5 days a week, really is not something I enjoy or mentally am able to cope with. Personally, I need something more creative, hands-on, which allows me to apply my knowledge in real life and interact with people on a daily basis. I found myself sitting in the office alone for most of my internship since all of my colleagues were freelancers who worked remotely and my internship host was always on the move. I realized I’m an extremely social person and I need a job that allows me to express that. Despite learning a lot of new skills and insights about myself, I figured out that working in the marketing industry is really not for me. You know what? That’s okay, I’ve accepted it, it wasn’t a waste, it’s just one more thing crossed off my possible careers list. I got clarity and that’s all I wanted.
